At the first event since the announcement of his presidential candidacy, US rapper Kanye West attracted attention with controversial and sometimes confusing statements. In a hall in North Charleston in the state of South Carolina, the 43-year-old musician spoke on Sunday evening, according to media reports, to invited guests about, among other things, racism, religion and drugs.
He said of the black freedom fighter Harriet Tubman that she had never really freed slaves: "She only let her work for other whites." Tubman was born around 1820 on a plantation in Maryland. She went down in the history books because from 1850 she helped countless other slaves to freedom as an underground fighter. She later became involved in the women's movement. She died in 1913. As a racist, West condemned the claim that his candidacy would divide black voters in the United States.
Kanye West reports abortion
At the event, which was called an election campaign, West burst into tears when he said that his father wanted to get his mother to abort him. "My mother saved my life," he said. Abortion was also an issue between him and his wife Kim Kardashian. Kanye West indicated that he was initially against the birth of their first child, daughter North.
The rapper wore a protective vest with the inscription "Security" on his appearance and had the year 2020 cut into his hair. West had spoken for the first time about two weeks ago about his – announced by tweet – candidacy for the office of US President. His slogan is "YES!" ("YES!") Read the magazine "Forbes". He calls his party the "Birthday Party" – because: "If we win, it's a birthday for everyone." It is still unclear whether the rapper submitted the documents required for the application. In several US states, the deadlines have already passed to be printed on the ballot papers.
In the November election, Republican President Donald Trump is expected to run against Democratic nominee Joe Biden.
