In an interview, rapper Kanye West spoke for the first time about his – tweeted – candidacy for the office of US President. His slogan is "YES!" ("YES!") Are, he told the magazine "Forbes", his possible vice president is Michelle Tidball, a controversial preacher, and he calls his party the "Birthday Party – if we win, it's a birthday for everyone."
The idea for a candidacy came to him in the bathroom. "I was in the shower and thought I was going to write rapeseed in the shower. I was thrilled to say, 'You will run for president' and I started to laugh hysterically." His two main advisors are his wife Kim Kardashian-West and Tesla founder Elon Musk. "I offered to be the head of our space program," West said in the interview.
West announced his intention to run on Twitter for Saturday's Independence Day. Kardashian-West had forwarded her husband's tweet with an American flag to her roughly 66 million Twitter fans. The couple have been married since 2014 and have four children. Tesla founder Musk had commented on Twitter on West's announcement of candidacy: "You have my full support."
West reiterated in the interview with "Forbes"Although again that the candidacy was meant seriously – it is still unclear whether he has submitted the necessary documents. In several US states, the deadlines have already passed to be printed on the ballot papers. West then only remains that Voters have entered his name in a free field, and since his announcement, US policy experts have been puzzling over whether an actual candidacy would affect Donald Trump and his challenger Joe Biden.
Trump calls West's candidacy "very interesting"
US President Trump described West's announcement as "very interesting." The rapper has a "real voice," Trump told the political portal "RealClearPolitics". As a rival, Trump does not seem to fear the musician: "Should he run for 2020, he should see it as a test run of what will happen in four years (until the next presidential election)." The rapper was one of the few popular artists who publicly supported Trump in the past. In 2018 he met Trump in the White House wearing a baseball cap with his campaign slogan "Make America Great Again".
To the goals of his candidacy West made no specific statements. West hadn't thought about the tax system or international politics yet, West said. "I will discuss this with the greatest experts who serve God and will return with the best solution." He also reserved the candidacy for the election in 2024.
West has often expressed his political ambitions. At the 2015 MTV Video Music Awards, he said he wanted to run in the 2020 U.S. election. Two years ago, he said in a radio interview that he might want to run for president in 2024.
