Opie Hendrix for president.

The Houston singer and songwriter steps into the political ring for “Unhappy People,” premiering on preview.houstonchronicle.com. It’s the title track from his upcoming fifth album. Watch below.

Hendrix says the song is “about the world we live in versus the world we want to live in” and calls it “a piece of personal activism.”

CHRON CONCERTS: Birthday Club sets a dreamy pop mood

The video drives home the point. It’s set in the Oval Office and features Hendrix as a clowning presidential figure with crazy hair. Sound familiar?

It was filmed in Houston at — get this — a private residence that Hendrix once played at for a private party.

“Was I ever in for a surprise when the host gave us a tour of his ‘man cave,'” Hendrix says. “It turned out to be an exact replica of the White House’s West Wing from the Obama Administration. Everything, and I mean everything, is an immaculate recreation down to the last detail. I thought, ‘This is the perfect song to parody the (expletive) show in Washington, D.C.”

Hendrix will premiere the “Unhappy People” album with a livestream-only show, 7:30 p.m. Sept. 25 at the Mucky Duck.
